Inspections

Pre-fire Inspections
Annual Business Inspections

The Chehalis Fire Department performs annual pre-fire inspections on all the businesses within city limits. Because the primary purpose of these inspections is to ensure life safety, we may identify a hazard and immediately inform the business owner or manager.

Performing these inspections also improves our Washington Survey and Rating Bureau (WSRB) rating. Most insurance companies use this classification to set rates for property owners and risks. The WSRB evaluates fire protection capabilities of all Washington communities and rates them on a scale of 1 to 10. We maintain a class 5 rating.

Common Violations

The most common violations we come across include:

  • Blocked passages or exits
  • Fire extinguisher deficiencies
  • Fire alarm and smoke detector deficiencies
  • Covered or blocked electrical panels
  • Fire doors held open by wedges or door stoppers
Fireworks Stand Inspections

For both Independence Day and New Years holidays, we inspect fireworks stands daily during their operation. These stands require an initial inspection to be permitted to open and sell fireworks. While inspecting, some of the things we look for are appropriate documentation, unblocked means of egress and serviceable fire extinguishers in accessible locations.

Knox-Box Program

We are in the process of implementing a mandatory Knox-Box program for businesses located within the city limits. At the present time we are identifying the criteria to determine which businesses the program would be applicable to.

Common Questions and Answers

Q: Why do fire extinguishers need to be serviced once a year?
A: It is a Washington Administrative Code (WAC) requirement.

Q: Where is the best place to put my Knox-Box?
A: This can depend on the type of business and construction of the facility. It is recommended that you contact us when you're getting ready to place it so that we can help you decide where to put it.

Q: Can I just order a Knox-Box myself?
A: You will need to contact the fire department so that we can order one for you that will fit our access key.

Q: Do I need to call and schedule an appointment for an inspection?
A: Typically, we identify all the businesses that require inspection annually and perform them throughout the calendar year as unannounced visits while the business is in operation.
