Request for Letters of Interest and Statements of Qualifications

April, 2023

The City of Chehalis is soliciting letters of interest for appointment to the part-time position of Municipal Court Judge for a four-year term beginning in mid-June 2023.

The Chehalis Municipal Court Judge hears and adjudicates alleged violations of city ordinances and state statutes, both civil and criminal, and infractions.  The judge presides over all hearings and decides all issues of law and those issues of fact not decided by a jury.

The judge works under the appointment of the City Manager and is confirmed by the City Council.  The judge has full and sole authority to decide individual motions and cases within the constraints of the municipal code and state law.  The judge is largely self-supervising with accountability for actions to the state judicial conduct commission.

The Municipal Court Judge is responsible for the establishment of court policy and operations of the Chehalis Municipal Court.  Compensation is based on an estimated sixty-one (61) hours per month to perform required services.  Terms of the compensation contract are subject to negotiation and are dependent upon qualifications.

Minimum qualifications for the position of Municipal Court Judge include graduation from an accredited school of law with a J.D. degree in law, five years recent experience in the practice of criminal law, and recent judicial experience on a full-time, part-time or pro tem basis in a court of limited jurisdiction within the State of Washington.  The judge must be a United States citizen, and a resident of Lewis County, licensed to practice law before courts of record of the State of Washington, and a member in good standing of the state bar association.
